BLOG PRESS: WaTunes Moves Solely to Facebook!

January 17th, 2011 (DETROIT, MI) — WaTunes, the social music service that enables users to buy over 10 million songs is now moving all its services entirely on Facebook. As of now, WaTunes is expecting to close access to its current website and direct traffic to its Facebook App page Music Store. Since last Wednesday, WaTunes has change the name of its Facebook App "Music Store" to "WaTunes" commercialize the brand.

So what does this mean for Facebook?

With this new move, Facebook users are able to use WaTunes as a music store destination of purchasing and downloading music without leaving the site. Users can rate and comment their favorite albums on their wall, share music on any other social network, and chat with friends while searching for that particular song. WaTunes also enables users to buy any song without an official WaTunes account. This enables just about anyone on Facebook to simply pick a song and buy.

"This is a very strategic move for us. Now with having the full catalog of all four major record companies including as Universal, Sony, EMI, and Warner as well as leading independent distributors like CD Baby, TuneCore, and ReverbNation, we are positioned to offer a unique catalog of music to all Facebook users without the need of them leaving their favorite social network destination." says Kevin Rivers, CEO of WaTunes.

Source: Hypebot

Just 2 months after the November 16th digital debut of The Beatles on iTunes, Apple has announced that it has sold more than 5 million track downloads and 1 million album downloads worldwide.  2 million of those tracks were sold in just the first week.  "Abbey Road" and "Here Comes the Sun" are respectively the current best-selling Beatles album and song in the U.S.

The Beatles 13 remastered studio albums, the two-volume “Past Masters” compilation and the “Red” and “Blue” collections are only available for digital download on iTunes worldwide. iTunes also has the exclusive rights to a  special digital edition of the “Beatles Box Set” featuring the “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964” concert film.

“We’re really excited to bring the Beatles’ music to iTunes,” said Sir Paul McCartney at the November launch. “It’s fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around.”

WaTunes: Mike Jones’ Kiss-Off Letter To Laid Off MySpacers: “We Can’t Continue On This Journey Together”

Source: TechCrunch

Whenever a company lays off 500 people, as MySpace did earlier this week when it gave half its employees walking papers, it generates quite a bit of anger and bitterness. The latest tip in our inbox from a dispirited former employee goes into a details about do-nothing managers who still have their jobs while all their underlings are now unemployed.

I won’t repeat the character assassinations here, but the former MySpacer did include something else I will share: The kiss-off letter from CEO Mike Jones. “He didn’t even take the time to personally sign the letters. It’s just a xerox copy,” laments the former employee. You can read the termination letter below. It is pretty standard, thanking those being laid off for their “dedication and commitment to MySpace” especially through its recent relaunch.

This is the part, though that must really rankle:

Although we can’t continue on this journey together—I hope you will all stay connected with MySpace and know that your contribution to the business was a unique moment in time and that you participated in something that few have been part of in our industry.

And what exactly was that? Dressing up MySpace for a sale, and then getting rid of half the employees to make its declining financials look a little more appetizing? Yeah, special times.

WaTunes: Official: MySpace Cuts 500, 47% Of Staff

Source: Hypebot

In an official statement today, MySpace CEO Mike Jones confirmed that about 500 employees will be cut globally. “With our recent relaunch as an entertainment destination for Gen Y, we introduced a much tighter focus, a significantly streamlined product and an updated technology platform,” according to Jones. The cuts come at the same time that parent NewsCorp has been publicly searching for a buyer for MySpace.

“Today’s tough but necessary changes were taken in order to provide the company with a clear path for sustained growth and profitability,” Jones said in the statement adding that the cuts should not reflect on the performance of MySpace's new design and focus. “The new organizational structure will enable us to move more nimbly, develop products more quickly, and attain more flexibility on the financial side.”
